Military Coup D’état in Niger: Prognosis and Impact on Ukraine

Abstract

This article researched the very actual topic of the military coup in Niger and its impact on Ukraine. First, the author looks at the general significance of Niger, defining its economic and political features. Niger is one of the poorest countries in Africa, but it is rich in uranium, oil, gold and coal, which are mostly mined by foreign companies from France, Canada and China. Politically, the country is very unstable and has experienced 5 successful military coups since its independence in 1960. In 2021, the first almost peaceful democratic transfer of power in history took place. But already in 2023, a new coup takes place and a military junta headed by Abdourahamane Tchiani (Omar Tchiani) comes to power. Further, based on the obtained facts, the author concludes that the cause of the coup is the extreme poverty of the country, which is caused by the draining of resources from it by foreign companies, as well as anti-French sentiments, which, as the author suspects, could have been fuelled by pro-Russian forces or directly by Russia. The reaction of the Western world turned out to be restrained, but clear: concern, a call for a peaceful settlement, but a refusal to withdraw the troops present on the territory of the troubled state. The ECOWAS countries were divided: those in which juntas are in power supported the new government of Niger and those in which democratic forces − condemned and expressed readiness for military intervention. As a conclusion, the author considers 2 groups of possible further scenarios of the development of events: peaceful and military. Among them, he supposes that a quick intervention of the ECOWAS countries, possibly even with the military support of the United States and France, and the return to power of a legally elected government is the most likely. У статті розглянуто дуже актуальну проблему військового перевороту в Нігері та його впливу на Україну. Спочатку автор вивчає загальну значимість Нігеру, визначаючи його економічні та політичні риси. Нігер є однією із найбідніших країн Африки, яка проте є багатою на уран, нафту, золото та вугілля, які здебільшого видобуваються іноземними компаніями з Франції, Канади та Китаю. Політично країна є дуже нестабільною і з моменту своєї незалежності у 1960 р. пережила вже 5 успішних військових переворотів. У 2021 р. відбулася перша за історію майже мирна демократична передача влади. Але вже у 2023 р. відбувається новий державний переворот і до влади приходить військова хунта на чолі з Абдурахман Чіані (Омар Тіані). Далі, базуючись на отриманих фактах, автор робить висновок що причиною перевороту є надзвичайна бідність країни, яка викликана викачуванням з неї ресурсів іноземними компаніями, а також антифранцузькі настрої, які, на думку автора, могли бути підігріті саме проросійськими силами або безпосередньо Росією. Реакція Західного світу виявилася стриманою, проте чіткою: стурбованість, заклик до мирного врегулювання, але відмова від виведення військ, що присутні на території неспокійної держави. Країни ECOWAS розділилися: ті, у яких при владі хунти, підтримали нову владу Нігеру, а ті, у яких демократичні сили − засудили та висловилися про готовність військової інтервенції. Як висновок автор розглядає 2 групи можливих подальших сценаріїв розвитку подій: мирні та військові. Серед них найбільш ймовірним м можлива швидка інтервенція країн ECOWAS за, ймовірно, військової підтримки США та Франції і повернення до влади законно-вибраного уряду.
