Проаналізовано формальні та змістові трансформації есею під час переходу тексту з цифрового середовища у друковане та навпаки. На основі аналізу провідних дискурсів сучасної української есеїстики та авторських наративних стратегій розглянуто роль жанру есею в осмисленні проблем національної ідентичності. &#xD;
The thesis focuses on analyzing the essay as a genre in the conditions of literary and media communication in order to find out its literature and media features. The study opens with overview of the history of the genre in Ukrainian and world literature and journalism. The genre model of the essay in world and Ukrainian literature is the product of modernism, the period when philosophy penetrated into literature. The period of postmodernism opened up new possibilities for development of the essay, due to the fact that the dominant features of the contemporary literary consciousness are verbal play, irony, emotionality, paradoxical thinking, open-ended form, intermediality, intertextuality, and appealing to the reader as a co-writer of the text. The dissertation generalizes theoretical approaches towards the genre of essay. Scholars define the essay as journalistic genre, a literary genre, a literary form transcending genre limits, a form of reflective writing, etc. The author of the thesis provides her own definition of the essay. It is a non-fiction literary genre, which combines both literary and journalistic features and has a free composition, opens an opportunity for a vivid expression of the author's individuality and contains a quick reaction to issues of great social significance. The author of the dissertation applies theory of communication to consider genre features of literary and journalistic essay. The thesis provides a scrupulous analysis of all textual categories of the essay. Another problem considered in the study is functioning of the genre in print and digital media. As a special type of text, the essay embodies all basic semantic and structural categories, such as integrity, cohesion, divisibility into parts, ability to transmit information, prospection/retrospection, completeness, modality, and intertextuality. At the same time, the author of the dissertations proves that these text categories in the essay have their peculiarities, because they depend on conditions of communication and the author's pragmatic guidelines. The communicative space of the essay is expanded through intertextual and hypertext links, multimedia and type of media, in which the essay is published. It happens because writers have to take into account thematic preferences and information policy of publishers. The intertextuality and the hypertextuality of contemporary essays ruin the principles of linear text perception and offer a broad spectrum of reading options. The most common intertextual connections in the contemporary essays are references to the author’s previous works and their characters, reminiscences of famous texts and characters, and allusions to the works of predecessors. In the context of mass media, the essay becomes a kind of media text, which operates in extra-linguistic conditions and acquires such essential massmedia features as dynamic character and stream mode of presentation of the contents, disposability and non-reproducibility of information. At the same time, the essay proves to be deeply integrated into information space and information policies of media owners and producers. When re-publishing their essays in the digital environment, the authors transcode the printed texts, adapting them to new communicative conditions. However, writers do not use all advantages that electronic media opens. They transform the texts only at the surficial level and limit themselves to playing with paratext, mechanically reducing or increasing the size of publications, to changing titles, etc. The active use of intertextuality, metaphorical style and structural flexibility make the essay a laboratory of solution of the most urgent intellectual problems of humanity. The thesis demonstrates the potential of contemporary Ukrainian essays in overcoming the crisis of the Ukrainian national identity. In their essays, the writers try to reevaluate historical experience and find new values, which can serve as benchmarks for their nation. The leading nation-building discourses in the essays by the Ukrainian writers are post-colonialism and Europeanism. The writers critically reconsider the colonial heritage of the Ukrainian society and focus on the national traumas that were inherited from the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. In order to make the Ukrainians believe that they are a nation with their own language, culture and traditions, the authors of the essays use a number of anti-colonial strategies, such as self-criticism, opposing their nation to other nations, and demonization of the Other. The discourse of Europeanism in the contemporary Ukrainian essays includes the Austro-Hungarian myth of Galicia, presented in a melancholic and nostalgic way. It concerns references to everyday life and architecture during the period of prosperity of Western Ukrainian cities when they were parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, etc. Another manifestation of the Europeanist strategy is appealing to modern European values, standards of life, etc. as a kind of national ideal, which the Ukrainians have to achieve. A significant component of the national identity in contemporary Ukrainian essays is the discourse of ethnicity. Its constituents are language, customs, religion, and culture. The essays of the contemporary Ukrainian writers clearly trace the regional self-identification of their authors, emphasize the opposition «we» – «they» on regional and linguistic levels, and use strategies aimed at exacerbating conflicts and humiliating the Other.

The thesis is dedicated to the research of the problem of Martinican and Antillean identity in the works by Édouard Glissant (novels “La Lézarde”, “Le Quatrième siècle”, “La Case du commandeur”, “Mahagony”; poetry collections “Les Indes”, “Le Sel noir”; philosophical essays “L’Intention poétique”, “Le Discours antillais”, “Poétique de la relation”, “Philosophie de la relation”). The eminent Martinican writer Édouard Glissant (1928-2011), one of the most important representatives of the French Carribean, made a remarkable contribution to the interpretation of the Antillean islands’ identity and history. The writer is sure that for forming the real collective memory of the Caribbean people it is necessary to realize and admit the painful past marked first of all by human trafficking and slavery that Glissant names “traumatic shock”. A thorough examination of a large number of historical, literary and critical works dedicated to the personality and creativity of the researched writer ultimately led to determining the main stages of development of Glissant’s studies and to defining that human trafficking and slavery are the key problems of his works. The violent export of Africans to the New World which was conducted systematically by shipowners from European countries is the central event of Glissant’s works and human trafficking is the main plot. It symbolizes the collapse of any genealogy, it breaks the line of continuity of generations. The writer thinks that trafficking prevented the formation of Antillean identity, because traditionally the identity of any community is based on the line of continuity of generations linking the ancestor with his descendants. But a slave taken from the African land and thrown on a Caribbean island became a “naked migrant”. The research work focuses on the author’s revealing of the evolution of the relations between the Martinican people and the island landscape. The Antillean landscape was a point of the spiritual support for É. Glissant and the images of nature are the artistic constants in his oeuvre. The writer is sure that the Antillean people should work on their collective consciousness, re-appropriate the space conquered by the colonizers and revive the history concealed during the period of slavery. The author emphasizes the impossibility of return to Africa and underlines that it’s necessary to recreate the history through rooting into the landscape. The research pays special attention to the philosophical concepts introduced by É. Glissant, such as antillanité, créolisation, culture composite / culture atavique, pensée archipélique / pensée continentale. One of the focuses is on the concept of “identityrhizome” or “identity-relation” developed by Glissant under the influence of the works by the French philosophers G. Deleuze and P.F. Guattari. The writer considers identityrhizome as an important element of the search for identity of the Antillean people because taking into account historical peculiarities and multiple cultures and peoples living in the Caribbean region, it transmits, in a substantive way, the complexity of Antillean being. Tracing the peculiarity of plots and composition of the novels by Glissant, we come to the conclusion that the author renounces chronologic exposition of events and naturalistic aesthetics, giving advantage to the powerful poetics. His novels have numerous authorial retreats, comments, narrative ellipsis, mise en abyme etc. The analysis of mythological and poetic originality of the works by E. Glissant showed that the author combined the elements of myths of the African people with rethinking of biblical text. Glissant is sure that legends and stories of African ancestors saved in memory of the Antillean people present the frame of reference to the man and the world, and their research allows to understand better the mental features of his people. On the other hand, his works are pierced by Christian perception of the world and by numerous interpretations of biblical plots and characters. It is shown in the research that Glissant established the link between the identity crisis in Martinique and the manifestation of the mental illness of some members of the Martinican society. The author connects the problem of madness with the gaps of collective memory and the absence of national consciousness of the Martinicans, caused by the colonialism. In his novels and philosophical essays, Glissant considers the phenomenon of madness as an individual model of human behavior and also within the framework of reflection on historical and social problems of the Antillean islands. The conclusions of the dissertation summarise the insights into the artistic and philosophic thinking by the author of Antillean history and the problem of identity which allows to fully disclose the significance of this writer’s oeuvre for Francophone postcolonial literature.

    <description>Title: Концепція особистісної ідентичності в романній прозі Міґеля де Унамуно
Authors: Маєвська, О. Т.
Abstract: У дисертації вперше цілісно проаналізовано, систематизовано й узагальнено концепцію особистісної ідентичності в романній прозі іспанського письменника Міґеля де Унамуно («Мир у війні», «Любов і педагогіка», «Туман», «Абель Санчес», «Тітка Тула», «Святий Мануель Добрий, мученик»). Цьому сприяли: визначення головних підходів до розуміння поняття ідентичності у філософії, культурології й літературознавстві; аналіз і систематизація корпусу критичної літератури зарубіжних та українських науковців, що стосується безпосередньо творчості письменника й ідентичнісної проблематики; визначення теоретико-методологічної основи літературнохудожнього осмислення особистісної ідентичності; з’ясування специфіки дуалістичної філософії, яка в унамунівській філософії визначається як аґонічність, концепту інтраісторії, що становлять основу трактування особистісної ідентичності у творчості М. де Унамуно; структурування і конкретизація зв’язків особистісної та колективної ідентичності, шляхів ідентифікації індивіда з окремим колективом та індивідом; дослідження способів вираження особистісної ідентичності у романній прозі М. де Унамуно на ідейно-тематичному і поетикальному рівнях з акцентуванням на ґендерній проблематиці, концепті пам’яті, наративних структурах втілення особистісної ідентичності автора і персонажів, інтертекстуальності як принципі конструювання ідентичності персонажів й автора; виокремлення й аналіз репрезентації особистісної ідентичності через мовне вираження, мовчання, приховування або замовчування, через зображення художнього простору. &#xD;
This thesis is the first scholarly effort to comprehensively analyze, systematize and summarize the concept of personal identity in the fiction of Miguel de Unamuno, Spain’s prominent writer («Peace in War», «Love and Pedagogy», «Mist», «Abel Sánchez», «Aunt Tula», «Saint Emmanuel the Good, Martyr»). The interest is predetermined by the paradigmatic nature of his works to increase understanding of the spiritual processes of the modern world in general, and to construct both collective and individual identity through the written word in particular. A thorough study of a large number of historical, literary and critical works dedicated to the personality and creativity of the researched writer ultimately led to determining the main stages of development of Unamunean studies and helped define the gap in the literary-critical scholarly field pertaining all novels of M. de Unamuno – namely the issues of personal identity. Thus, we have conducted a historical and literary study of reception of M. de Unamuno’s oeuvre in Ukraine. The research has also systematized and summarized critical literature dedicated to the issue of identity in humanitarian studies in general, and literary criticism in particular. The research work focuses on the processes of self-identification of Unamuno’s characters through a community expressing a collective identity and serving as a stimulus and trigger for the creation of internal contradictions within individual characters resulting in a crisis of personal identity and an agonistic world perception. The latter is the main concept for Unamuno’s worldview, which is understood not as the last death throes, but as a struggle between two mutually exclusive elements. At the same time, the work does not study the notion of collective identity due to the fact that M. de Unamuno’s philosophical and fictional works were well-researched from this perspective by foreign and domestic researchers. The author creates a variety of fictional situations that have great potential for understanding and interpreting personal identity. In his novels «Peace in War» and «Saint Emmanuel the Good, Martyr» it is important to specify the connections of personal and collective identity for the formation and building of the individual, that realizes itself in his/her assimilating to and complete absorbing by the community, or, vice versa, in his/her alienation/separation from the group. In his novels «Love and Pedagogy», «Mist», «Abel Sánchez» and «Aunt Tula», M. de Unamuno considers the problem of self-awareness through the Other in the «I-Other» plane, where the main components of such self-awareness are identification with parents, love experience, etc. Such components are defined as both positive markers of identity construction and negative ones that together often cause a crisis of identity leading to a tragic end. Thus, the writer highlights the importance of seeking internal peace through the obligatory presence of agony which assumes an indispensable background for identity construction. Unamuno’s novels concentrate on the identity crisis caused by blurred gender markers, where natural essence is confronted with stereotypical roles imposed by society on both sexes («Love and Pedagogy», «Mist» and «Aunt Tula»). This dissertation investigates the novels of M. de Unamuno in terms of the strategy of preservation/blurring of identity, basic methods and techniques of memory which form the basis of individual personality, as well as the tradition of a collective personality. This process is disclosed in different ways throughout all novels, which provides the opportunity to trace how the processes of constructing, as well as preserving and representing personal identity take place through the issues of memory. The main ways have turned to be: the theory of the mnemonic actor, the active individual using memory as an instrument of his own self-affirmation; the techniques of oral and written identity fixation which involve methods of transferring individual memory via externalized memory media, temporal and spatial metaphors of memory. The research pays special attention to the novel’s poetics as to artistically investigate the issue of personal identity. One of the focuses is on modelling identity via narrative, intertextuality, expressive means, silence and suppression, and spatial representations. The narrative in terms of organizing one’s knowledge about personal Ego has been distinguished, namely, where the theoretical construct of the authornarrator-character (according to Paul Rikoeur) is transformed into an interwoven mixture of reality and fiction. The effect of scattering the human Ego is related to the emergence of the polyphonic nature of the novel, which uses complex narrative models for revealing characters’ and author’s personalities. The ‘intertextuality’ concept in our research is treated as the strategy for constructing identities in the works of the Spanish classic writer under study, where the author-narrator and the characters consider their own ego projections as life patterns associated with certain literary characters, real writers and intellectuals representing the Spanish national tradition and representing other nations. Besides, a problem of communication performing a dual function has also been analysed: identity construction (through conversations and guidelines) and identity expression. The latter, in addition to dialogues, monologues and written text, also uses different figures of silence, pauses, gestures, etc. It has been determined that spatial identity coordinates perform various functions of formation, preservation, and even separation of the individual from the collective, as well as his/her identification with the Other. A comprehensive reinterpretation of artistic space in the novels of M. de Unamuno from the perspective of identity construction is a new advance in the realm of Unamunean literary studies. The conclusions of the dissertation summarise the insights into the artistic processes of constructing personal identity in Miguel de Unamuno’s fiction, which allows to fully disclose the significance of this writer’s oeuvres for the culture of the modern and postmodern epochs.

    <description>Title: Жанрова специфіка, проблемно-тематичний аспект і поетика short stories Грема Гріна
Authors: Алатея, М. М. Х.
The thesis presents a comprehensive study of genre specificity, the subject-matter aspect and the poetics of short stories – short fiction by Graham Greene, which comprises fifty-three (full English edition) – fifty-four (full edition of French translations) works. Both scientific and critical reflection and readers’ perception of G. Greene, prove that the author remains one of the greatest, if not the greatest, representatives of the English novel of the 20th century. His novels «Stamboul Train», «Brighton Rock», «The Heart of the Matter», «The Power and the Glory», «The Quiet American», «The End of the Affair», «Our Man in Havana», «The Comedians», «The Honorary Consul», «The Human Factor», «Monsignor Quixote» have gained the world fame, and some of them were translated into Ukrainian. At the same time, despite the fact that the author started his creative work with short fiction, which includes novellas and short stories, and he kept writing them throughout his life, his short stories have not become the object of serious and large-scale scientific studies yet, neither in general, nor in Ukrainian literary criticism, which leaves Greene completely unknown as a master of short fiction with only one of his novellas having been translated into Ukrainian. The research objective is to define the genre affiliation of works that make the corpus of Graham Greene’s short stories, to identify and describe their subject-matter complexity and to carry out a poetological analysis of novellas and stories in order to determine artistic means in their functional, content and aesthetic role. The scientific novelty of the results lies in the fact that the thesis has been the first to introduce Greene’s short stories, such a vast layer of artistic creative work of the classic of the world literature of the 20th century, into Ukrainian literary discourse – they had neither been made the object of studies of Ukrainian criticism before, nor had been translated into Ukrainian. For the first time, the genre attribution and differentiation of the works that constitute short fiction, have been carried out, selected and described in accordance with the genre-forming features (those that bear the genre) of the type of Greene’s novella and the type of Greene’s story, their relationship with tradition and their inherent specificity, in particular, the realistic principle in depicting characters, time and space relations, attribution to likelihood, which is created by selecting concise, but expressive details and characteristics in describing characters and events, precise psychologization, application of oneiric and fantastic elements, paradoxical statements and situations and a wide range of the comic. Besides, for the first time, the short fiction has been analyzed from the point of view of its subject-matter content revealing its main ideological and motivational vectors, which prove an extraordinary broad range of interests of the writer regarding life conflicts of a man of the 20th century. The most typical topics of the short fiction have been identified as the following: the theme of dramatic living conditions, solidarity and sympathy; the epoch-driven theme of the ex-territoriality of a personal identity, which can be called the «Englishman abroad»; the theme of religion and faith; the theme of death as a result of life drama and as a mystical phenomenon; the theme of love and sexual relations; the theme of childhood (childhood disappointments, phobias, aggression, dreams); a man in war; espionage and betrayal, mysterious and abnormal phenomena; the theme of the future. At the same time, many motifs intersect with one another practically in all themes, leading to the conclusion that this polymotivity, which gives novellas and stories an ideological and semantic depth, makes a distinctive feature of Greene's short prose. In addition, it broadens the understanding of the writer's artistic way of thinking: the subject of his thoughts covers worries of a child, psychology of a child, and the world of child’s fantasies, on the one hand; and the possible future of humanity and the indestructibility of religious consciousness, the catastrophic consequences of scientific and technological progress, on the other. The latter two topics are not inherent in the writer's long works of narrative fiction at all. The analysis of the subject-matter and motif content of short stories shows that the horizons of his artistic thinking are much wider than it used to be believed. At the same time, the motifs of escape, suicide, betrayal, cheating, depression and mental traumas of childhood, which are emphasized by a number of Anglo-American critics, do not play the leading and determining role in the general atmosphere of the artistic world of Greene’s fiction at all. On the contrary, the dominating motifs include courage in the struggle against hardships of life and ingenuity in overcoming them; keeping a sense of dignity, compassion and empathy for characters who find themselves in difficult or extreme situations; sympathy for heroes who have not lost their need for tender feelings and affection; mockingly satirical or ironic attitude towards callousness, snobbery, immorality and, conversely, a good-naturedly humorous attitude towards the natural manifestations of human nature. The problematic field of the subject-matter of short fiction covers challenging aspects of the contemporary to the writer epoch: philosophical-existential, moral-ethical, and socio-economic collisions typical of a man of the 20th century; religion, religious beliefs and their influence on human behavior; psychological and pragmatic motives of human behavior; phenomena of life and death; the future of the world order. The specificity of the space and time of character`s of typology and organization (chronotope) of the narrative of short prose is revealed. Its features include such moments as elaborate description of the place and details of space, in particular exotic loci, in which more than a third of novellas and short stories take place; relief and visualization of characters; the use of time plans as the most important characteristics of the characters, revealing their past and simultaneously matching their lives with the certain historical period of time. The main forms and means of the comic, used by the writer in almost half of the works of short prose, are identified. It is noted that Greene addresses the means of the comic in his novels more often than in the stories, which confirms the opinion of the majority theorists of the genre that the comic is one of the genre-forming features of a novella. In general, the comic in Greene's prose acquires an important content-semantic and aesthetic function, giving it a philosophical depth and a life-affirming character. Thus, short stories, or short prose, represented by the genres of novella and story, do not make an ordinary product of Greene's creativity, being just a «sketch» for his novels, but they represent an original and self-valuable part of his short fiction with its subject-matter and stylistic diversity, which proves him to be one of the best, if not the best, storytellers of his time.
